Favorite Local Food Spots in Salt Lake City

Since there are lots of people coming into town for Alt this week (yay!!) I thought I would highlight my ten favorite foodie places around the Salt Lake City area for those looking for a place to try. Although I'm not originally from Utah and still have many places yet to give a go, these are ones I thought of off the top of my head, and have always come away with memorable experiences. See my entire list and map after the jump...
Forage : My favorite restaurant in Salt Lake hands down. Mac took me here a few weeks ago again for my birthday and it is an overall artistic and enjoyable food experience. If you are a foodie this is a must! It is a smaller place and only open for dinner, a little spendy but you will come away with a very memorable evening. They are taking away numerous awards lately including one of the top restaurants in the U.S.
Les Madeleines : My favorite Bakery! Their specialty Kouing-aman is amazing and sells out fast! It was even highlight on the Food Network. The Carrot Cake Cookie is yummy as well and pretty much everything else. For lunch I enjoy their Sesame Chicken Salad Wrap.
Cucina Toscana : I haven't been to them all but this is my favorite Italian spot in the area. So delicious and the service in impeccable.
Tulie Bakery : Patterned after Tartine in San Francisco this Bakery has more of a modern and minimal fresh and European atmosphere and the yummy bakery items are top notch. I enjoy their Banana Creme Tarts but most things are delectable!
Mazza : If you are wanting something a little different to try-- go for the Middle Eastern cuisine of Mazza. There are two locations and it is really yummy food.
Porcupine Grill : If you like pub food this place is pretty good and a perfect after ski hangout.
Lone Star Taqueria: Quick authentic Mexican food. Their fish tacos and salad are amazing with new fresh fish selections daily, I also often see many skiers and boarders here after hitting the slopes.
Takashi : Some of the best sushi in town.
Pawit's Royale Thai : Best Thai food I've ever had in Utah. The
Pizzeria 712 : Yummy Pizza, their ham & cheddar panini is incredible and the desserts are yummy too. Although an interesting location, I love the atmosphere.
Communal Restaurant: Delicious food and they are now open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Worth a trip for sure with a great designer ambience.

i hail from (and reside in) good ol' SLC and must second that Tulie Bakery emotion.
upon entering (and eating the sweet treats) i was most taken with the European feel and the rustic-y tables waiting for you to sit, relax and nosh in. perfect.
can't wait to try get out there and try some of the others on your list - especially Forage!
bex.
Great list!! I look forward to meeting you at ALT. We really love Malwali's Pizza at The Riverwoods too, so if you are down that way be sure to check it out too.
Great picks. Some of my favorites too! I am actually going to Takashi tonight with a blogger who is in town for the conference. Sad I am not attending though:(
those are great recommendations!
i also love gourmandise bakery (250 south 300 east), they have great pastries, and serve other food too!
i also like eva's on main street for their rosemary and parmesan french fries... so good!
also, bruges waffles and fries (336 West Broadway) are also amazing!
i'm sure there are more, but i can't think of them right now..
lots of good places to eat in slc!
I just wanted to say thanks for your blog. I check it on a regular basis and I love the diversity and style that you have. I am a stay at home mom with three children 5 and under, so my time to do design projects is limited. Your blog makes a very pleasant break in a hectic day. It nourishes my inner artist:)
Sage's Organic cafe for the Vegans and Vegetarians! Gotta add Pago and Copper Onion. I second Eva's and Bruge's waffles. LOVE LOVE LOVE Mazza too!
em's on capitol hill.
tin angel near pioneer park.
pago at 9th & 9th.
i'm a vegan and those restaurants make certain i can eat farm fresh foods as well as my very omnivorous friends.
em's is hands down my favorite! A little pricey but SO worth it. Even the butter tastes better there!
Also I would recommend Frida Bistro. They serve mexican food with a nice unexpected gourmet twist.
this is such a great idea. i only wish i would be there to explore all the fun places. have fun this weekend!
Chanon thai for thai food.
Afrikan Mart and restaurant for ethiopian food
Himalayan kitchen for Indian food
Siegfrieds for german food
Vosens bakery for German bread
Gormandiese for baked goods, cakes and yummy treats
Little world for Chinese
Gossip for vietnamese
Aristos for Greek
Mazda for lebanese
Ricos and red iguana for Mexican
Tony Caputo's is a must...
Great list! I'd also add The Dodo in Sugar House. They have the most amazing salads and soups, with pastry chefs on site to whip up incredible desserts at the end of the meal.
Try Eva's on Main Street for delicious small plates. Also Este on 2nd or 3rd S between State and 2nd for AWESOME nyc style pizza. Or Stonecutter is also pretty good for Pizza...
Don't forget Bambara! So, so good.
I'll second the votes for Gourmandie's and Sage's-they do a crazy-flavors, vegetarian pizza night that's the best, even if you eat meat!
you are making me miss Salt Lake. I love Mazza so much. and yes, those Kouing-aman at les Madeleines are TO DIE FOR! Thanks for the tips on the others for when I am visiting family. At the Gateway there is a cookie shop that serves up a variety of freshly baked, right out of the oven cookies and they are all so gooey and delicious!
Mmm, I worked down the street from Les Madelines once upon a time and I would walk there once a week to get Kouing aman. One of the best treats I've ever tasted.
i've had those kouing amans, and i think they are the closest thing to sweet perfection i've ever tasted. i went back three times in a 2 day trip. gluttonous.
if you get the chance and want to impress your natural-food loving friends, one world cafe has amazing food and the concept of "pay what you will" adds to the experience. i love it there.
great list! Those are some of my favorites as well! i would add Eva to the list, a hip tapas restaurant in downtown Salt Lake.
YES! Pawits! I was going to suggest that but I see you have it covered. Honestly the best Thai I have ever had. EVER. I'm wondering if Mac told Rod about it, because we discovered that little slice of amazing when we were there for a few months. Have fun at Alt. I wish I could go!
I live in SLC and my favorites are Moochies (a delicious sub shop that was on Drive-Ins, Diners, and Dives) and Mrs. Backer's Pastry Shop. Delicious!
Vinto for great pizza!
eggs in the city, blue plate diner, or ruth's for breakfast...can't go wrong with any of those!
I have to echo the vote for mazza as well :)
Love your recommendations...tghe pastries look real yummy!
wooo - so glad you posted this. as a new transplant in SLC, i'm always on the hunt for new places to grub. LOVE red iguana, still dying to try forage, and think mazza's is the best of them all!
Rachel, I'm sad I didn't get the opportunity to meet you at Alt! I'm a little blogger who won a free ticket to the conference and loved the entire experience. What was even cooler was that my husband and I used AirBnB.com to book a room and we got to stay in a house across from Tulie bakery! My husband had the chance to try it one morning and it was amazing! I can totally see why it's on your top SLC picks.
Maybe we'll meet next year!
I'm heading to Salt Lake City this week. Do you have any suggestions for breakfast/brunch spots? Thanks!
