Homasote and Inspiration Boards

A few weeks ago I covered and hung two 4' x 8' homasote boards in my office, it has been something I've been wanting to do for a long time and I finally got around to doing it. Like a brand new sketch book or blank canvas my two empty boards hang awaiting my pins to pushed. Lately, I've been looking for inspiring creative boards to get my juices flowing of how I am going to first start hanging things. Here are a few I am currently digging.

1: Drew Barrymore's Board from Domino.

2: Design for Mankind did an amazing downloadable e-zine about inspiration boards last month, where I saw Erika's board.

3: From the great blog Inspiration Boards the creative walls of Meg Warner.

DIY:
Homasote is an awesome and inexpensive material to use for inspiration/creative boards. It is soundproofing material composed of recycled newsprint that is excellent for push pins etc. If you are interested on where to find it go here, from my experience of asking multiple Home Depot and Lowe's employees about this stuff... they had no idea what I was talking about, "homa-what? was usually the response." (Perhaps that is why it took me so long to complete.) If you want to see a great 'DIY' tutorial check out this post from Shiso Mama. Apartment Therapy, and Martha, have also talked about it.

Cool! I had never heard about Homasote. I cannot wait to buy some and start an inspiration/dream board for myself.

well I am glad I was not alone... I called all over creation looking for Homasote! (same puzzling response you got) I evenc called the distributor to inquire about a wholesale account, but when he asked how many I needed and I thought to myself "1"... I was too embarrassed - I just said "probably not enough to make it worth it". HA. Mine is a 4'x8' cork board from Staples (online)... Kathryn (Snippet & Ink) asked me to do a post on how I made it... it's in the works... I can't wait to see how yours turns out!!!
cheers to inspiration boards!

Your post made me laugh because I called several Home Depots and Lowes but they gave me the "what is she talking about?" look. I ended up finding a local supplier but it wasn't easy. My inspiration board is now covered in gorgeous light aqua fabric that has a slight sheen. I love it!

I have a tiny inspiration clothesline in my studio.. with things and colors that I am finding inspirational at the moment. It's a fun thing to have. Good luck with your boards.. show us when you are finished!

I cannot remember where, but a couple days/ weeks back I saw a board on some blog that was made similar to a clothes line with pins and they attached the objects with the clothes pins.

I'll do some searching and see if I can find it.

Ooh, great article. I guess we all have inspiration boards on the brain. I've been planning on installing one too.

Rachel, I think we'd all love to see how your boards turned out. Do share!

Okay so at Home Depot and Loews you can find something similar to homasote called "compressed paper board". I've used it several times for bulletin boards and it's fantastic. They will even cut it to your exact specifications at Loews, and likely Home Depot too.

I hear a Calico Corner fabric store just hit UT--a great spot to find Amy Butler fabrics and the like. I plan to re-cover a few of mine soon for a change of scenery and plan on hitting CC to see how their selection ranks. I'll let you know....

All of my mother's great career accomplishments came from her 'Vision Boards'.

I want one..........

P.S. I gave you some link love today...I hope you don't mind....

So Calico Corners is a no go--but I'm going to check out Pipers Quilt to see if they carry Amy Butler & the like.

For those looking for a place to buy Homasote (Full disclosure: I occasionally freelance for the company I'm about to mention), try Green Depot. Northeast only, though. Regardless: Homasote's great stuff.

Do you use Novacork Homasote or just regular building Homasote?? The price difference is great and I can't seem to find the cork Homasote.

Thanks!

I know this is a seriously old post, but I just had to chime in to say that homasote is really the same material used for those cheesy ceiling tiles. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying the whole board.

Just in case there are some watercolor artists out there, homosote board is great for stretching (or just pinning) watercolor paper. However, where to find it is a problem. I've been looking but have had the same experience from Lowe's and Home Depot.
