San Francisco
My husband + I did decide that we needed a little weekend getaway, so next weekend we are going to San Francisco. Funny, how a music video can inspire my trip choice eh? At first, we were contemplating taking a sleeper car on the train because we've never done that, but decided to fly instead, so we could spend more time in the city. (Maybe next trip?) Has anyone taken a train trip (w/ a sleeper car) in the U.S.? I'd love to hear about it.
So far, I've gotten some great suggestions, emails, even power point presentations, etc.. about what do to in the city and I greatly appreciate it, thank you, thank you. If you have any other tips I'd love to hear about them, especially if it involves any kuhl design or paperie stops. I am super excited for this trip, because it has been a long, long time since I've been, and Mac has never been. yay!

I know it's not exactly in the city, but Tail of the Yak in Berkeley is a pretty special shop that you should check out. In the city, Sue Fisher King is a beautiful one. If you just want to grab a quick lunch, Marina Sub on Union Street is one of my favorites from high school - definitely add the sauce and avocado! Have so much fun!
my husband did a sleeper car from vancouver to sanfran and he said it was a great way to travel.

As a native, please don't call it "San Fran" while you're there. All of us just call it "The City." Check out Little Otsu in the Mission for paper goods and don't miss Frjtz--Belgium fries and crepes; they have a new outfit on Valencia Street also in the Mission. And while you're there, hit up Minnie Wilde, one of my homegrown fave clothing boutiques. Have fun! And don't forget to bring a light jacket and lots of clothes for layering--we're having some warm days and cold nights lately.
One more tip I failed to mention about the city--check out Paper Source (the one on Chestnut in the Marina is the largest) and Yuzo Arts on Union Street. There is also one down on Market and Gough but I can't remember the name. You could look it up though. There is also a cute Japanese stationery store in Japantown that boasts an excellent selection of Yuzen paper (I bought a few rolls myself a few weeks ago) at great prices. Have fun!

The train is a very fun thing if you like the journey as much as the destination. It's roughtly the same time as driving, but without having to pay attention. I took it from Minnesota to Washington state, and while I got to see all the splendor of North Dakota (that's a joke) during the day, and missed the mountains and lakes of Montana and Idaho during the night.
Definitely check out the curiosity shoppe in the mission, dandelion in potrero hill and the coolest florist in town, birch in pacific heights. welcome to sf!
I lived there for a couple years - and San Fran, The City, SF, whatever you want to call it works fine.
I recommend the chocolate shop on 24th and Noe. They have chocolate from all over.
Also, go over to Fillmore and California. All up and down Fillmore are cute shops. You'll love it.

Agreed on the "SanFran" bit...being a native we all call it "the City". The Japanese shop that Stephanie mentioned is called Kinokuniya Stationery & Gift. If you're looking for SERIOUS paper, Flax is the place to go, it's right on Market St. in the heart of the Castro.
