Philadelphia + NYC

Every year, my family likes to take a trip....this summer since half of our family will be back east, we are going to Philadelphia, New York City, and upstate NY (Niagara Falls etc..)

We've all been to NYC and have done most of the touristy things before, so this time we're looking to mix it up. Same with Philadelphia (although less acquainted).. we're looking to fill our days with must see sights, adventure, eats and treats, and shops. Any suggetions? I would love to hear about any of your favorite stops.

As someone who lives in Brookyln I recommend coming over there because it is so easy and the restaurants and stores are amazing. I love Roebling Tea Room, it is my favorite and simply amazing.

Also there is a great show coming to the Guggenheim on Louise Bourgeois so I highly recommend going up there. Also Home in the west village is an amazing brunch place. As well as Cafe Habana in Nolita though it fills up quickly but the food is amazing and the shops around there are great.

Also weighing in from Brooklyn, I'm looking forward to seeing the Olafur Eliasson Waterfalls this summer. I saw them setting up the one in Dumbo, but it hasn't started yet.
Maybe try hitting up one of the free outdoor concerts: summerstage in central park, prospect park bandshell, mccarren park pool, etc.
Shopping-wise: ABC Carpet and Home, Muji, Uniqlo, Bird

For Philadelphia:
- Capogiro gelato (www.capogirogelato.com) located at 13th and Sansom and 20th and Sansom.
- Any of the BYOBs. I recomment Radicchio (North 4th Street in Old City), Cochon (http://www.cochonbyob.com/), or Little Fish (600 Catherine Street).
- If you're on 13th, you must check out Lolita (Mexican BYOB), Open House (http://www.openhouseliving.com/openhouse/), and Bindi (Indian BYOB).
- Other favorites include La Colombe coffee off of Rittenhouse Square, DiBruno Brother's at 18th and Chestnut and Tria Wine Bar at 18th and Sansom.

I hope you enjoy it here. I love this city!

Philly is one of my favorite cities! You must do the Trolley Tour, it is very touristy but it gives you such a great "look" at the city and then you can choose where you wish to tour after the glimpse of what there is to offer. It is also full of trivia information that will come in handy in the future!
Have a great jorney!

No touristy stuff! Good for you! (although if you haven't been to the top of the Empire State Building, you might want to; most agree it is in the "super-touristy but not over-rated" category.)

Union Square is a great place to check out. Go to Max Brenner for dessert.

Chelsea Market is amazingly fun and has cute shops, and an organic coffee place that makes amazing cappuccino.

B&H photo if you're at ALL interested in any sort of photography. Plan to spend at least an hour.

Here's a list of the top 25 boutiques in NYC. I LOVE boutique shopping!

use hopstop.com for getting around. I would be lost without it.

Ha, I was also going to suggest Brooklyn, but looks like Jessica and Jennifer beat me to it! There's so much going on there right now in terms of shops and restaurants, and the view OF Manhattan from the waterfront is much better than the views IN Manhattan....

I recommend eating ever chocolate chip cookie you can get in NY. I've never had a better cookie then in NY.

2 words: Shake Shack. Get the Shack burger, fries, and any kind of shake. In fact, I'll probably be there so look for me!

A few favorite shops -- they may seem pretty common to locals, but to out-of-towners... LOVE 'EM! Kate's Paperie, Fishes Eddie, Dean & Deluca, La Maison du Chocolate, and the gift shop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We loved eating lunch at the French Culinary Institute. It's a beautiful experience for an excellent price. I'd do it again in a heart beat.

I like the Frick Collection, if you want to do a museum or two.

And last...shopping. Since I love a good deal I find myself at Century 21 at 8 a.m. (before it gets packed), and the H&M near the Empire State Bldg b/c its huge and has an ample selection of hip, European styled children's clothing.

If you want to do an afternoon tea, the Regis Hotel is the place.

Of all the small galleries in philadelphia (and there are tons in old city - if you're here during the first friday of the month definitely check go down there that night), my favorite contemporary one is the lock's gallery (around 6th and walnut). a walk around rittenhouse square is always pleasant if you like people watching and if you want to do something offbeat and fun, check out north bowl in northern liberites (retro bowling, arcade games, great food and a photobooth!). have a great trip!
