What is on your list?
The Visitor : has me thinking about my views on immigration.
God Grew Tired of Us: has me pondering how blessed we are, much about gratitude, the various tragic African conflicts, and the lost boys.
Three cups of Tea (just finished reading) has me thinking about how one person can make a big difference in the lives of many, and how focusing on education is key to many problems around the world.
Thanks for the suggestions. I am usually an avid reader, but with a new baby I have been suffering some withdrawals. I'll be sure to check these out at the ol' B&N this weekend. Then perhaps I'll have a better comment.
ReplyDeleteI read Three Cups of Tea last year and thought it was very inspiring. His determination, loyalty and perserverance and his wife's support were important lessons to me. Thanks for the movie recommendations also, I have not seen any of them and will add them to the list!
ReplyDelete"the visitor" was one of my favorite movies of the year! richard jenkin's acting was subtle and heart-breaking.
ReplyDeletea movie that has always stayed with me is "defending your life." it really makes you think about how much fear is keeping you from experiencing true happiness in life. it's a short, but funny and sweet little movie.
I looooved 'The Visitor.' No surprise since 'The Station Agent' is one of my all-time favorite movies as well.

ReplyDeleteThe Visitor is on my list of films to see. I will certainly check out God Grew Tired of Us. The book may have to wait in my completely overwhelming list of things to read, but I'll add it as well.
If you have not already seen The Fall, please do. It will make you love life and love the world in all of its tragic glory. It has been the most inspiring movie I have seen in most of the year.
Thanks so much for the suggestions. I've found that our tastes line up pretty similarly. I have The Visitor on my list of things to see and have had Three Cups of Tea on my list for awhile. Thanks for reminding me.
ReplyDeleteThe visitor was a great movie! In regards to books I just finished the book theif by Marcus Zusak & it was very powerful.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear you liked Three Cups of Tea, it is the next book to read for my Book Group. I couldn't agree more about education being the solution to many of the world's problems. I will have to check out the other two.

ReplyDeleteI just watched the film "Brick Lane" based on the novel by Monica Ali about a Bangladeshi woman who is living in London (not by choice)and how she navigates life as an immigrant. It got quite intriguing when she began having an affair with a young Bangladeshi man who was born and raised in London. It explores their cultural similarities and differences and really made me think about immigration, religion and culture. I haven't read the book, which of course, got better reviews than the film.

ReplyDeleteI saw the Visitor and loved it... definitely gives you new perspective on the problems with immigration in this country (U.S.). The system needs to change...

ReplyDeleteGod Grew Tired of Us is an amazing move and book. I just finished up a semester study on genocide in Rwanda and Darfur and used this as one of my reads. It was amazing. Another great read is called The Translator by Daoud Hari, if your interested :-)

ReplyDeletei saw "God Grew Tired of Us" at Sundance years ago and a few of the boys were there. It was inspiring, but interesting to see how quickly they had adapted to their new life.
