FOUND PLAYING CARDS by guest: Brooke Reynolds

Brooke Reynolds

I spent a lot of time walking around our neighborhood in Brooklyn when
my children were very little, and every once in a while we'd find a
lonely playing card on the sidewalk. I love the ones that look a little
worse for wear, dog eared with dirt ground in. I don't know how they get
there, but we always pick them up and dust them off and bring them home.

Have you read Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life? It's a great middle grade chapter book and one of the main characters that lives in New York collects playing cards found on the ground in the city. It makes me imagine the author, Wendy Mass, spotting you picking up a playing card one day and writing you into the book!

I love your collection of found things. Lovely. Being green while making art - love it.

I'd love to see the flip side and all the different kinds of royalty you have...

You're the second person I've seen today who has mentioned living in Brooklyn. Makes me so envious!

I have never found a playing card on the street. Wish I had. Seems so poetic!

the dirtier, the better!

I don't live in a place where people lose used playing cards. I wish I did. Awesome.

I'm like Caitlin, this immediately reminded me of Berger from SATC. What a cool little collection.

Beautiful. I love that you have both red and blue of some designs. I could imagine becoming obsessive about that.

Came here from Inchmark.

Brooke, since I grew up in your old Brooklyn neighborhood, I can tell *exactly* how they got there.

The Italian social clubs that line Court & Henry Streets is how. Those guys love to bring out the cards, sit at a folding table on the sidewalk and play cards.

I find playing cards in random strange places all the time. Here in Buenos Aires they are from the Spanish Deck, so they have one less card per suit.
If I have the chance, I will use the cards as my tarot message from the Universe.

i actually do also collect playing cards I find some places. They make for a good inspiration for graphic design!

Hi, I find playing cards all the time also. It is driving me crazy why nobody can tell me why! My mother tells me that each card can be read like a tarot card. some psychics use playing cards to tell the future and amazingly when i find a card and look up its meaning the relation to my life at hand is outstanding!

Currently on Holiday in vietnam and nearly EVERY street has discarded playing cards... It would take me about a day to find a complete pack I reckon. :)
