House in a Hill : Villa Vals

Villa Vals

One of my favorite childhood books was about various animal architects that made these really sweet houses. I remember looking at it over and over again and wanting to live in one of their cool animal house creations - whether it was up in a tree, near a marsh or in a hill. (I wish I knew the title of the book -- I will have to ask if my mom remembers.)

Villa Vals

Anyways, when I saw this 'house inside of a hill' at mi casa es su casa, I was flabbergasted at how close it comes to one of my most favorite houses in that book, I really can't believe it!

Villa Vals

This place called, 'Villa Vals' is situated in Switzerland with stunning alpine surroundings, and is designed by Christian Müller Architects and SeARCH. What is even more fantastic is that you can actually stay here, what a amazing retreat that would be! Learn more about it here and see more incredible photos here.

The design also includes an underground passageway to the "official" front door--through an old barn! So cool. I would love to go. We posted about it recently and it added to an already (serious) case of wanderlust.

the book you are describing sounds like Brambley Hedge. It was a series and all these cute little mice made homes in tree trunks and daisy fields. x Emily

That was one of my favorite books! I believe that the rabbit was an architect and I vividly remember the spider's house. I think I have it. I will have to find it.

Love these images! And so know what book you're talking about, but can't - for the life of me - remember it either!

Need a House, Call Miss Mouse!

That was the best...Remember the lizard's house? I spent hours staring at that page and it's mid-century modern coolness.

Liz! You pegged it. That is the book! I will have to see if my parents still have it. I checked online and used copies run around $140! Crazy. Thanks for doing a little research.

OMG! Need a Hous? Call Ms. Mouse was my all-time fave kids book, and I the house in this post could totally be one of the illustrations. LOVE IT! (I've still got my childhood copy of the book, and my 5 year old loves it now.)

so beautiful! The thermal baths at Vals are also considered one of the great works of modern architecture, though it's not too well-known outside of architecture circles in America; more to love if you can afford to go visit!

Need A House? Call Ms. Mouse is my FAVORITE children's book of all time...maybe my favorite book *period*. It's out of print, but I still have my copy, and I photocopied it an laminated it as gift for my niece on her 2nd birthday...we read it together, and she loves it too...I even tried to get Chronicle Books to pick it up and reissue it, to no avail. ::sigh::
