Smoothies

This last year or so I've been hung up on trying different smoothie recipes and green drinks, so when the January issue of Whole Living came in the mail the cover instantly resonated with me and I discovered 25 great recipes from their website that are helping me mix it up. I've tried a few and I can't wait to try more, today I made the Banana-Peanut Butter but switched out milk for almond milk. I am a big almond milk fan, have you tried it? What is your favorite smoothie / drink recipe?

oh, man. i think hubs and i have been doing breakfast smoothies for a cool 3 years now. we mix it up a lot, but it's usually a berry combo (blueberries are supposed to be a daily staple, you know). like you, we always use almond milk, and also oatmeal, flaxseed meal and protein powder, no matter the flavor. i swear, the combo has kept my size level whether i'm doing a good job of being active or not.

sorry for the uber long comment...the more people you help out, the better, right?

thanks for taking us on this journey with you!

what fantastic recipes! i've been making breakfast smoothies for awhile now, but it's pretty much the same (non)recipe on over and over. just frozen fruit, yogurt, soy m, and protein p. it's always nice to have more options - thanks!

i love almond milk. i put it in smoothies all the time. usually i put in: tons and tons of spinach, a really ripe banana, some frozen fruit, almond milk, flaxseed meal, sometimes some chia seeds, some hemp oil, and sometimes a little protein powder. i like the taste of it although it's not something i really savor. i just try to down it, thinking of all those lovely greens and nutrients i'm getting.

I just found the W.O.W. blog you referenced earlier in your blog. How cool. Since you're a fan of smoothies, I thought I'd share www.greensmoothiegirl.com. I have no benefit by sharing it--only thought you might find it interesting, as I take part in her local group buys and make green smoothies almost daily for my kids, my husband, and myself. It's almost cured my 5 yr-old's asthma and I swear we're healthier for it. I never want to go back! Anyway, props to you for the healthier choices you're making! I love your blog.

I'm a year behind you, as I just started making smoothies for myself this year in an effort to lose some excess weight. Mine always start with mixed berries, protein, and skim milk.

I can't wait to try some of those recipes. I don't drink smoothies much now, but I'd love to start. What do you think of Whole Living Mag?

oh YUM. those look delish, and the pb and banana sounds so yummy.

Do you have a Vitamixx? Hubs and I are wanting to get one for smoothie making. Our blender just doesn't do it. I am having major smoothie cravings lately. I definitely love almond milk over all the other milk substitutes. I mainly do fruit smoothies, but add goat or sheep yogurt on occasion to make them creamier, and I throw some greens in on occasion too.

i always make the same smoothies and forget that other combos exist, haha! i'm a yogurt/strawberry fan but looking at the other commenters i guess i should be using protein powder too!

Thanks for the link to all these fabulous new smoothie recipes. I usually have smoothies after working out. Typically it's just frozen berries, greek yogurt and whatever juice I have on hand. I've tried some green smoothies but didn't like them as much. I am sooo trying the banana peanut butter smoothie immediately! My husband is a huge fan of almond milk and has proceeded to get everyone he knows hooked on it too. I gotta say the vanilla tastes just like a milkshake!

Never tried almond milk but now I'm intrigued. We're big on smoothies as well, but not in the winter. It's just too damn COLD here! (Boston) We are starting our day with a hot bowl of oatmeal these days. But when the sun comes back around to our side of the world, I'm going to try some of these new flavors. Blackberry-cinnamon sounds interesting, and I definitely want to try avocado-pear! :-)

spinach, frozen berries (from Costco), 1/2 frozen banana, an apple (seeds and all), ground flax seed and water.

tastier than you'd imagine without the need for dairy. my kids love it... especially my 1 year old

I always make a blueberry, banana smoothie: frozen blueberries, one frozen banana (great texture), non-fat plain yogurt, squeeze of honey, soy milk, and blend! Even my husband loves it.

Just discovered apple cider vinegar drink--so delicious! You mix a bit of apple cider vinegar, some sweetener (honey, stevia...), and hot water, plus some freshly grated ginger if you have it on hand, and drink up. Great for digestion, calorie-free, and so so good.

There is a place here in Chicago called Protein Bar. It's down in the loop so 9-5er's can have a healthy choice for lunch. They make these fantastic protein smoothies with choices of greek yogurt/almond milk and different kinds of protein based on who you are. I went there nearly every day for a smoothie and I miss it now that I'm not working down there. I like to keep almond milk in the fridge or at least unsweetened soy milk and I keep agave nectar on hand for smoothies like these. I'm gonna go make one now thanks to this post!

Wish I weren't allergic to peanut butter...at least then, DH could have some without fear of killing me:(
Bananas, pineapple, orange juice, yogurt, and crushed ice is my smoothie of choice. Yummy!

Have you ever tried kefer? I'm a huge fan of kefer smoothies. I just mash up whatever fresh fruit I have laying around and stir it into a glass of kefer (sometimes i use the pre-sweetened kind but if I use unsweetened I'll just add a couple teaspoons of sweetener.) It's lovely and I drink one everyday. Gotta love those pro-biotics!

YUM! These look fantastic! I've said this so many times in the past week, but I've been seeing so many things about green smoothies lately and I'm so dying to getting a juicer and make them all the time! It just seems perfect for me, ha!

My favorite is almost exactly the same as the peanut butter smoothie on Whole Loving, I also sub in almond milk as I don't eat dairy products. The major difference is that I add coco powder, a heaping tablespoon at least! So yummy.

My favorite-so far-from Whole Living has got to be the chocolate one. We do green smoothies daily, but every now and then that chocolate one hits the spot!

oh. these look delicious. thanks, Rachel! We have a lot of smoothies around here too

try to peanut butter smoothie with a table spoon of cocoa or carob powder - cocoa makes it taste like a peanut butter cup (a la happyherbivore.com) and carob powder makes it taste like a butterfinger (a la me haha)

I love almond milk!! Many of my early breakfasts end up being smoothies, so this was a good find :)

My two absolutely favourite - tried and true recipes:

1) WATERMELON BANANA AND COCONUT MILK! (and ice)
I don't go by a recipe - just add in the ingredients to taste. some people like more banana - I prefer less to let the watermelon and subtle coconut taste shine.

2)If you like beets, this is a great one. I make half of this in the juicer and then blend with other ingredients. I juice a beet and a little bit of lemon. then add in the blender with ice and frozen raspberries. I like this one to be a bit thicker and I usually serve it as a smoothie or a sorbet.
delicious!
