How to make playdough
This is pretty crazy to me in hindsight, but I have never made playdough until yesterday! My daughter ran out of her other kind, so we decided to make the homemade stuff and it was super easy and fast. Would you like to know how to make playdough? Follow the tips below...
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
2 cups water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons canola oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar
food coloring or other desired color agents like carrot juice etc.
Steps:
1. Mix all of the ingredients together in a pot over low heat and stir until the dough pulls away from the pan and forms a ball.
2. Take warm dough out and place on counter and knead, then divide into balls for coloring.
3. Make a hole in the center of each ball and place desired color in each section and then knead each ball again to mix in the color. (You may want to use plastic wrap or gloves for this stage)
4. Voila! The playdough is ready to play with. Make sure to store in an air-tight container, temporarily we are just using plastic sandwich bags. Another tip I've heard, but not observed is to dispose of the playdough after a month or so it doesn't go bad.

I too made play dough for the first time recently. I can categorically denounce the cheat's no-cook version. It's rubbish. The cooked way is the only way.

homemade "salt dough" play dough was one of my favorite things as a kid! i even made some of ornaments out of the dough last christmas! love the color choices you made!

The best play dough trick is to add one pack of unsweetened Kool aide drink mix while the dough is cooking. It colors the dough and gives it a great fruity smell!

this is a great reminder that when I have kids, I should not buy play-doh.. the colors of yours are so much better, and it looks good enough to eat.
I love making playdough... but truth be told, my mother is still way better at it than I am. My tricks are to add sparkles to it sometimes, that is kind of cool... and to add a drop or two of essential oil. I love the smell of it too, but lavender coloured dough that smells like lavender is also pretty awesome.
I don't think you have to worry about it going bad, the salt content is probably enough to keep that from happening. In our house, the bits that get lost or dry out whittle the dough away too fast to worry about it anyhow. It also makes really brilliant gifts!

I've use Kool aid to make it smell good! Any flavor, just explain that playdough is not to be eaten! ;)
