Michael Bierut's Notebooks

Fascinating post over at the Design Observer about the way Michael Bierut keeps notes in his 85 different notebooks over 26 years.

Perhaps it is more of a artist and designer thing to keep a notebook/sketchbook, so I am wondering... how many of you utilize and keep notebooks, sketchbooks or books of lists full of your thoughts, tidbits and ideas? What is your method?

I keep a handful of composition notebooks around (dedicated to different areas of interest) and add my thought & ideas on the topic, as well as glue sticking articles and inspirational pics in them too. It gives me a creative and very visual outlet for the many things swirling about in my brain!

I have kept many notebooks over the years that kind of became a pile of looseleaf papers as I would write on whatever was in front of me. While I still have one or two notebooks when I need a more tangible medium, I have moved a lot of my writings into an online notebook so I can keep track of it!

i am a notebook collecting addict. i have so many i can't keep track of what or where they are (which is odd because i am an organizer). as soon as i decide to stick with one, i find another that is even prettier. sigh.

I have notebooks I never write in! I basically scribble on whatever is closest, with the expectation of deciphering it later.
Most of these aforementioned notes are promptly lost though :S

yes! I love little notebooks. I usually buy mine from wal-mart. They actually have nice designs for a good price (of course).
I always keep one in my purse and scribble in at least a few times a day. Grocerie lists, wish lists, recipes, things to remember, inspiring quotes, etc. I've kept most of my old ones too.

I've kept some, but mostly I sketch, write, glue as I go, tear out and ditch. I try not to covet my own ideas, so I'm fresh for the next project.

I've kept notebooks for years, jotting down ideas, sketches, gluing in stuff that I like. I'll refer back to them when working on my own projects — or for inspiration when I'm feeling blocked. For years I've used the pretty elastic-bound ones printed by Galison — love all the different patterns they're available in — but I may move to the classic Moleskine eventually!

i just bought a pocket moleskine and made it into a planner. The last half is open for ideas and such :)

I have 3 notebooks in my purse. 2 small ones, for notes. 1 a bit larger, for doodles and sketches.

A friend from Norway sent me the hand bound sketchbook and asked me to post some of my sketches. I spent the whole day with a bad scanner, and then flickr.

I love the freedom of drawing, away from the computer.

i always need a notebook. usually several.

i'm forever trying to keep separate things in separate notebooks, to keep the learning notes from the creative ones, to keep the text from the images, the private from the personal. but i always end up with drawings in my japanese vocab book, drafts of letters in my sketch book, vocab in my shopping lists.....

I have a box full of clippings and idea inspiration from over the years, but it's actually shrinking as I used Google Notebook more and more. It's a great resource and you can make several different notebooks, with chapters and different categories. It's fun to flip through and it's available anywhere there's internet access (aka my BlackBerry!).

I am obsessed with notebooks! I collect unique ones and love to write in them. After they are filled, i keep them and every once in a while i refer back to them. It helps me realized how much my though process has changed!
