Books

Here are some things I am perusing this week and last week. Yikes, I am a little behind with my sharing.

1.Domino: The Book of Decorating - Sad to see the magazine disappear, but this book shares a lovely collection of some of their favorite rooms, a way to savor those decorating looks and tips.

2.Tartine: This is a selection of recipes from beautiful bakery in San Francisco that I have yet to visit. The book is a work of art in itself, and I am in the mood to make something delicious after flipping through these pages, banana cream pie... with caramel and chocolate anyone?

3.Three Cups of Tea : We are reading this in my book club this month. I have yet to crack the pages but I am intrigued by the back cover quote, " The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his remarkable humanitarian campaign in the Taliban's backyard." Anyone read this?

4. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle : Although I am only on disc 3 I am fascinated by this book (which I am listening to on cd). It discusses the lack of agricultural education we have in the U.S. and how we don't really have a food culture. Well-known author, Barbara Kingsolver moves with her family to deliberately eat food in the most local way possible. To learn more check out their website.

What are you perusing lately?

Three Cups of Tea is a really intriguing story about this man's endless dedication to his service. This story is very good, but it can be a slow read (which you might not expect). I'm almost to the end!

I am currently reading Animal Vegetable Miracle and it has changed the way I think about food! I still have to eat on a budget but I am so much more aware of what I put into my body. It's pretty wild all the crap we are sold and we buy! If people just took the time to think about what they are eating and where it comes from they would be healthier and their food would taste better.

I have been struggling to get through 3 cups of tea, I want to read it, the story is great, I am just not sure what the problem is!

The Kingsolver book is the best book I've read in about three years. I love her way of storytelling about food. I've heard that "Three Cups of Tea" is wonderful. Why have you not been to Tartine? It is a wonderland! Try their lemon tart!

Hey!! It’s nice to know hear you’re reading all those books!!! I read half, well more than half of Three Cups of Tea, I was so disappointed with the judgmental facts about Pakistan. I know the author does a lot of humanitarian work for the country but he talked about the country in the most negative view. He made the country as a whole seem all uncivilized and uneducated, while that's not the case.
PS I love your blog!!

Those sound fabulous - and most have been on my TBR list for awhile.
I am reading The Girls by Lori Lansens at the moment. A story of twin sisters conjoined...interesting!

I love love love Three Cups of Tea. Greg Mortenson, the author, lives in my town and the Central Asia Institute is here too. I think it's such a great thing that he does.

I loved Three Cups of Tea and didn't think Mortenson made the country of Pakistan as a whole seem uncivilized and uneducated. Hopefully you enjoy it.

I'm so so so sad that Domino is folding. It was such an amazing magazine and I really liked their book.
I've read all of these and they are really great.

Loved loved loved the Kingsolver book. The three cups of tea guy does some amazing work but personality-wise I think he's be a pain to hang out with. Something about his tone totally rubbed me the wrong way.

Three Cups of Tea is life-changing. Greg Mortenson is human, so naturally he has some qualities that might annoy, but he is changing the lives of so many girls in Pakistan which is SO inspiring.

Love your blog!

Last year I read both Three Cups of Tea and Kingsolver's book - there are BOTH two of my favorites now! Greg Mortensen's story is truly amazing - he truly makes you feel like part of a family in Pakistan, like you KNOW the people that he worked with the children he built schools for. Fabulous story. And Kingsolver's book is so inspiring! I"m determined to have a large garden this year because of this book and Michael Pollan's books. I recommend In Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilemma!

Three Cups of Tea is a great read-- it was a bit slow to get into, but really once you get just a little ways in, the reading comes much quicker. The book tells an amazing story; the work Greg Mortenson has done is inspiring.

Definitely loved Animal, Vegeable, Miracle! Completely changed a lot of my views (have you "heard" the part about tobacco farmers yet? - thought that was interesting!). Another wonderful book by Kingsolver is Prodigal Summer. Just finished that. It would follow AVM nicely.

I too am listening to Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and I have to say that I am so happy to be doing so. There is so much helpful information there. I am glad also to be listening to it too, rather than reading it. It seems so personal that way. I will be purchasing the book though as a reference.
