Under the Same Moon

Under the Same Moon

How many of you enjoy foreign films? It is tricky to find someone who will sit down and watch one with me, (not everyone loves to read subtitles) but this last weekend a friend and I watched Under the Same Moon. This inspirational flick tells a story about the challenges of immigration with great heart through a young boy's long journey seeking to unite with his mother again. It has a universal appeal, is gripping at times, but of course ends well. The little boy's character was both uplifting and endearing. Watch the trailer here.

What about you ... have you seen any interesting films lately?

I always watch the trailers on the apple.com homepage - the fils tend to be more "artsy" and less mainstream. Yesterday I watched the trailer for "Precious" - a movie that Oprah and Tyler Perry are putting out. It looks like a real tear-jerker - almost like a more modern "The Color Purple" - but it looks good nonetheless.

I love foreign movies. I don't mind the subtitles. Part of my learning Japanese was done with the subtitles. I'm so used to it now that I almost a double vision :D
I'll try to check the movie out.

I too love foreign films and am often stuck watching them alone. Unfortunately, because I do not speak the languages of the most recent films I have watched (in German and Hindi) I can't recall their names. The German film was translated to something like "The Stranger"?
If you like "action" films in two languages, the American film "Body of Lies" was very interesting to watch, especially with my arabic friends, and gives an interesting viewpoint on the war.
And I agree with the girl above that "Precious" looks amazing! (And sad)

Have you seen "The Visitor"? It's set in NYC & is also about immigration.

As far as foreign films, I just watched "I've Love You for So Long" - I thought Kristen Scott Thomas did a wonderful job in that movie!

I'm def going to add this movie to my netflix list!

love foreign films. Priceless with Audrey Tautou is fun.

This isn't foreign, but there's a great new food documentary I've seen called Food, Inc.

I love those gardening gloves! I have them and they are wonderful.

As for the film, I've been wanting to see it forever. I think I have to add it to my netflix queue. Two of my favorite films of all time are foreign films...Cinema Paradiso and of course, Amelie. :)

Ooh, I saw that in theatres and it was so good! Recently I watched "Love me if you Dare" or "Jeux D'enfants." It's sort of similar to Amelie in filming but darker... Definitely one of my favorites.

but in college i took a fabulous film as art class and i watched probably 50 movies, most of them foreign! some of my favorites were the scent of green papaya from vietnam, children of heaven and like movies from iran, after life from japan, bicycle thief from italy, any satyajit ray movie, and my name is ivan from russia. dang i miss that class!

I loved that movie! To echo some of the above comments, I would also recommend The Visitor, Tell No One, and Love Me if You Dare. I just saw Sin Nombre, produced by Gael Garcia Bernal & Diego Luna--a gritty & graphic depiction of immigration, but I would still recommend it.

I've seen some good films lately, too. Cinderella Liberty is a film from the 70s that just came out on dvd and is really bittersweet. Summer Hours is a new French film with Juliette Binoche that I liked. And, I know this is a big blockbuster movie, but the new Terminator is surprisingly good. The best of the big summer movies so far, I think.

This blog is outstanding. It really is such a pleasure to read. I wasn't aware of this film but I'm interested in seeing it now. Two films that I saw recently that I enjoyed were, "Arranged" by Diane Crespo and Stefan Schaefer. And also the film, "Mostly Martha" directed by Sandra Nettelbeck.
