Thoroughly Modern Millie + House of Elliot

Last night my husband and I went to a musical production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. We bought tickets to various performing art events at a nearby universities that has helped us go on more pre-planned dates and expand our cultural horizons. If you haven't watched the cult classic Thoroughly Modern Millie staring Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing I would recommend it, and although I am not always the biggest fan of people randomly jumping up while dancing and singing about, this one is a riot. I first saw it a few years ago when my cute cousin Andrea introduced me to it, and in some ways -- I really like the flapper era, I think mainly because of the outfits.

On the same note, we watched this BBC series called The House of Eliott months ago and it also gives an interesting flavor of the roaring 1920s. This series is about two sisters who set up their own couture fashion house in London and it showcases their plights in the fashion industry, the designing process and their own personal back stories and realizations along the way. The costumes and setting are quite beautiful. But, FYI... I am also one that can be often found watching those BBC productions. Pia Jane Bijkerk has a nice post about this with some screen shots.

What are you favorite 1920/1930's era movies?

Love TMM, too! Julie Andrews and MTM are so charming!

My fave 20s/30s film include THE THIN MAN series, MY MAN GODFREY, IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, and the unintentionally hilarious SORORITY HOUSE. Of course GONE WITH THE WIND, but that's not really the same.

A great time to see MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON if you haven't!

Love it too! I recently saw singing in the rain on the big screen. i never thought of it as eye candy but it is so colorful. there are lots of cool headbands and 20's inspiration in it.

I've been reading your blog for a while now - love your stuff!

I almost fell off my chair when I saw this post. I was at Thoroughly Modern Millie last night too. My sister is a BYU costume designer and got us into it for free. I feel strangely connected now :)

Wasn't it just AMAZING?

House of Elliot is wonderful! I'm a sucker for the BBC as well. My favorite movie set in the 30s is definitely Cold Comfort Farm, though. Absolutely hilarious.

I do love "Thoroughly Modern Millie," especially in the movie when she says "That's my beauty spot!"

I'm a Gatsy girl myself. I read that novel every year or so. Love the movie with RR as well.

just realized my typo -- I meant to say "Gatsby" as in The Great Gatsby...

Don't you love rediscovering classic films?! One of my favorite of all time is Stage Door (1937). An amazing cast -- Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Ann Miller -- and a great story. I highly recommend it!

Loved "House of Elliot" - just recently netflix'd it and enjoyed it all over again. Loved the original Great Gadsby with Robert Redford - not necessarily for the acting but for the clothing and scenery.
